Privacy policy

In short

The game stores everything it needs on your own computer: your campaign, your leaderboard and your settings. It contains no advertising, no analytics, no tracking and no user accounts.

Online play is the only part that talks to a server, and only while you are playing: the server passes the two players' moves back and forth and keeps nothing once the match is over.

This website sets no cookies, loads no external fonts or scripts, and measures nothing.

Controller

The controller responsible for data processing on this website and in the Chesstics app is:

Florian Strasser
Florian Strasser – Webdesign & Programmierung
Max-Schmeling-Str. 1A
40597 Düsseldorf
Germany

Phone: 0211 / 97632121
E-mail: kontakt@florian-strasser.de

The controller is the natural or legal person who alone or jointly with others determines the purposes and means of the processing of personal data.

This website is hosted by Mittwald CM Service GmbH & Co. KG, Königsberger Straße 4–6, 32339 Espelkamp, Germany. Mittwald processes data on our behalf and under a data processing agreement as required by Art. 28 GDPR. Their privacy policy: mittwald.de/datenschutz.

Server log files

When you visit this site, our hosting provider's web server automatically records the information your browser transmits: the browser type and version, the operating system, the referring page, the host name of the accessing computer, the time of the request and the IP address. This data is not merged with other sources and is not used to identify you. It is processed on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — we have a legitimate interest in a technically sound and secure presentation of our website.

Cookies, analytics, fonts

None. This site sets no cookies and requires no consent banner, because there is nothing to consent to. It runs no analytics, embeds no advertising, and loads no fonts, scripts or images from third parties — everything it needs is served from this domain, and the typefaces are the ones already on your device.

Encryption

This site uses TLS encryption throughout, recognisable by https:// in the address bar. Data you transmit to us cannot be read by third parties in transit.

2. The Chesstics app

Data on your device

Chesstics stores the following on your computer only, inside the app's own storage: the campaign in progress including its clock, your local leaderboard, the chosen language, sound and full-screen settings. None of it is transmitted anywhere, and it is deleted along with the app.

The game contains no advertising, no analytics, no crash reporting to us, no user accounts and no tracking of any kind.

Online play

If you choose online play, the game opens an encrypted connection to our matchmaking server at multiplayer.chesstics.app, which runs at the same hosting provider in Germany. While you are connected, the following is processed:

Your IP address. Technically necessary to establish and maintain the connection, as with any internet service. We do not store it.
The match itself: the moves of both players, the state of the board, the campaign stage you are matched at, and — for a match among friends — the five-character room code.
A display name. The game sends a fixed, generic name; it does not ask you for one and does not transmit your Apple ID, your Steam account, your device name or any other identifier.

All of this lives in the server's working memory for as long as the match lasts. Nothing is written to a database or a file, no profiles are built, and nothing is passed on to third parties. When a match ends — or you close the game — it is gone. If your connection drops, your seat is held for about one minute so you can rejoin; after that it is discarded too.

The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR: processing is necessary to provide the online play you requested.

3. Download via the Mac App Store or Steam

Chesstics is distributed through Apple's Mac App Store and through Steam, which is operated by Valve Corporation. When you download or buy the game, the store you use — Apple or Valve — processes your data as an independent controller. We have no influence over that and receive no personal data from either of them, only anonymous, aggregated sales statistics that cannot be traced back to individuals.

On Steam, Valve's own client runs alongside the game and keeps records for your Steam account, such as that you own the game and how long you have played it. That is Valve's processing, not ours, and we see none of it.

Apple's privacy policy: apple.com/legal/privacy. Valve's privacy policy: store.steampowered.com/privacy_agreement.

4. Contacting us

If you write to us by e-mail or call us, your message and the details it contains are stored and processed for the purpose of handling your request. We do not pass this on without your consent. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where your enquiry relates to a contract, and otherwise our legitimate interest in answering enquiries, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. We keep such correspondence until it has served its purpose, unless statutory retention periods apply.

5. Storage periods

Unless stated otherwise above, we store personal data only for as long as the purpose it was collected for requires, and delete it afterwards — subject to statutory retention periods under tax and commercial law.

6. Your rights

You have the right to obtain information about the personal data we hold about you, its origin, its recipients and the purpose of processing, free of charge and at any time. You also have the right to have inaccurate data corrected, to have data erased, to have processing restricted, and to receive data you have provided in a common, machine-readable format (data portability).

Where processing is based on your consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time with effect for the future. Where processing is based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, you have the right to object to it on grounds relating to your particular situation.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, in particular in the member state of your habitual residence, place of work or the place of the alleged infringement. The authority responsible for us is the Landesbeauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Nordrhein-Westfalen.

For any of this, write to the address above.

7. Changes

We update this policy when the game or the website changes in a way that affects it — for example when a new feature processes data it did not process before. The current version always applies.
